Amusement parks can be fun. But what could be more traumatic than to face a life-changing accident when you’re supposed to be having fun? Usually, amusement park accidents happen due to:

• lack or insufficient ride safety instructions
• poor maintenance
• negligence on the part of the amusement park
• the rider’s health condition
• negligence on the part of the guests

Amusement park accidents can result in serious bodily harm or injury to a person. He/she can be a guest or a worker. In 2005, there were more than 15,000 amusement ride-related injuries in the US according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The most common injuries include:

• contusion, abrasion
• strain or sprain
• laceration
• fracture
• concussion
• internal organ injury

The Consumer Product Safety Act defines amusement ride as “any mechanical device which carries or conveys passengers along, around, or over a fixed or restricted route within a defined area for the purpose of giving its passengers amusement, which is customarily controlled or directed by an individual who is employed for that purpose and who is not a consumer with respect to that device…”

An in-depth investigation conducted by the CPSC revealed several hazard patterns associated with amusement ride-related incidents.

Mechanical failures

These include missing safety pins, broken welds or structural components, exposed electrical wires, broken drive chains, malfunctioning lap bars or other safety restraints, failure to shutoff, improper detachment of cars and improper detachment of structural components.

Operator behaviors

These include abruptly stopping the ride following an apparent mechanical failure, improperly assembling or maintaining the ride and defeating safety equipment such as brakes and automatic overheat cutoff switches.

Consumer behaviors

These include intentionally rocking cars, standing up, defeating safety restraints, sitting improperly such as sideways or with feet above lap bar, holding a child above the safety restraint, and in one instance, a disembarking passenger intentionally restarted the ride by pressing the start button as other passengers were disembarking.

Others

Include rides that can injure people while apparently functioning normally, without an unusual or inappropriate behavior on the part of consumers or operators. An example is a hand-powered ride called the “Spaceball” in which the occupant is spun extremely rapidly. Five reports of eye hemorrhage and one report of retinal tear and possible cerebral edema were associated with this ride.

CPSC files document reported cases of amusement ride-related cerebral and retinal hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, loss of consciousness, headache and dizziness. Fatalities with little or no overt trauma have occurred during or after rides which induce abrupt changes in speed and direction.

For injuries sustained by guests, the law holds the owner or operator of amusement parks responsible under any of the following:

• negligence or tort
• product liability
• premises liability

Once liability is established, the victim will be entitled to compensation. The amount awarded may vary depending on the degree of negligence and the extent of the injury or loss.

There are so many things one can do when on family vacations.  Depending on the time of the year, you can go to the beach, sight-see, or even just relax at your lodgings.  But if you want some real fun for the whole family on your next vacation, why not check out an amusement park?  And if you are planning to vacation in the New York area, there are a plethora of different amusement parks you can go to, all with different things to offer.  And in terms of places to stay, there are plenty of great New York vacation rentals to choose from at MetroFlats.com.  So, without further ado, here are some of the five best amusement parks in the New York area!

1.  Six Flags Great Adventure-Jackson, New Jersey: This might not exactly be the closest destination if you are staying in New York City, but it is worth the drive, believe me.  Of course, there are Six Flags theme parks all around the country, but it is always worth it to check one out.  For all of you roller coaster nuts out there, there are a great deal of different ones to choose from, all of which are extremely thrilling.  For a personal recommendation, I would suggest checking out the Batman and Robin ride.  The line can be extremely long, but by the time you get off this hair raising ride, you will be glad you waited.

2.  Coney Island-Brooklyn, NY: If you are on a family vacation  in New York, it’s almost a necessity to check out Coney Island in Brooklyn.  Make no mistake: this is not just your run-of-the-mill amusement park.  Yeah, there are rides, arcades, and all that stuff.  But Coney island is also home to a great beach, a fantastic aquarium, and even a minor league baseball stadium (home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, the minor league affiliate of the New York Mets).  Having been to the aquarium, I can with all confidence recommend checking it out, especially for it’s interactive exhibits (you can pet some sting rays!).  As for the rides, the most well known one has to be the Cyclone roller coaster and the Wonder Wheel, all of which are very fun and well worth the price of admission.

3.  Point Pleasant, NJ: Like Six Flags, this is also quite a drive from NYC, but it’s also well worth that drive.  I used to go here a lot as a kid, and I have plenty of fond memories of it.  If you are looking for a place with a ton of different rides, this might not be the place for you.  But if you want a great beach, a fabulous boardwalk, along with some good rides, I would definitely check Point Pleasant out.  The boardwalk is especially fun, offering plenty of fun games, and good old fashioned boardwalk food to chow down on.  All in all, you will have a fantastic time here, as long as you don’t mind driving a lot.

4.  Adventureland-Long Island, NY: Since 1962, Adventureland has been one of New York’s premier amusement parks.  And one of the unique things about this theme park is the cost: it’s free!  That’s right, you pay absolutely nothing to get into Adventureland.  Rides do cost tickets, which cost one dollar each, but that is really a small price to pay considering the free admission.  As for the attractions, there are plenty of fun rides to choose from, including some fantastic water rides like Crocodile Run.  This is definitely the best place to check out if you are on a tight budget.

5.  Mountain Creek-Vernon, NJ: Not that into roller coasters and such, but still want to have some fun?  Check out Mountain Creek in Vernon, NJ for a wide array of fantastic water rides.  Of course, with summer coming to a close, the window to experience this park is closing.  But there is still time, as the weather out is still pretty hot these days!  I’ve been to Mountain Creek three times and have had a wonderful time each visit.  There is even a huge wave pool, which will entertain you for a long time.  If you are into water rides, this is the place for you.

What is the difference between a Regional Theme Park and a regular Theme Park?
I am working on a Hospitality Research Project and am foggy on the difference between a Regional Theme Park and a Theme Park?

A regional one isn’t part of a larger group of theme parks. Disney World/Land, Sea World, Six Flags, Bush Gardens, these would be regular theme parks. There are several of them and they have a common theme. Dutch Wonderland in PA would be a regional park. There is only one of them and is themed for the area it’s in.

How to get alcohol into a theme park?
I am going to a Halloween themed event at a local So Cal theme park in a couple weeks. I want to to bring in some booze so I do not have to purchase it there (pricey).

I am not an alcoholic!

Just want some drinks to calm my nerves and have a good night. Any ideas how to get it in?
I know I can drink before hand. I will be there for 7+ hours. My question is how to get it IN…..

I’ve always liked Amusement park rides like the Orbiter and Extasy and so on. But I always wondered how they were tested for safety. I also overheard some people talking at my state fair about how some rides are only held together by just a few bolts. Is anyone else ever scared of going on one because of the fact it can just fall apart? Just wondering and what are your opinions…

Yes, it is very true. My father was killed by an exploding ride at a fair in 1997.
